When the weather warms up, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a glass of homemade iced tea. While a hot cup of tea can still be enjoyable on a sunny day, iced tea offers a wonderfully cooling way to enjoy your favourite loose leaf blends.
The best part? Making it at home is incredibly simple. Whether you prefer fruity infusions, refreshing mint teas, or classic green teas, the possibilities are endless. With a little creativity, you can create your own signature iced tea to enjoy all summer long.
What Tea Works Best for Iced Tea?
The simple answer is: almost any tea can be used.
However, we often recommend fruit infusions because they are naturally flavourful, caffeine-free, and easy to brew without becoming bitter. Their vibrant colours also make them especially appealing when served over ice.
That said, black teas, green teas, herbal infusions, and even rooibos can all make excellent iced tea. The key is choosing flavours you already enjoy drinking hot.
How to Make Iced Tea
1. Brew Your Tea Stronger Than Usual
When making iced tea, you’ll want a stronger brew than normal because the melting ice will dilute the flavour.
As a guide, use approximately:
- 2 teaspoons of loose leaf tea per 200ml of water
Follow the recommended brewing time and temperature for your chosen tea.
2. Cool and Serve
If you can’t wait to enjoy your iced tea, allow it to cool slightly before pouring it over plenty of ice.
For the best flavour, let the tea cool naturally to room temperature before chilling it in the refrigerator. Add ice just before serving.
3. Add Your Own Twist
One of the joys of making iced tea at home is customising it to your taste.
Try adding:
- Fresh berries
- Citrus slices
- Peach wedges
- Mint leaves
- A drizzle of honey
- A splash of lemonade
- Your favourite spirit for an iced tea cocktail
If you’re using black tea or prefer a sweeter drink, add sugar or sweetener while the tea is still warm so it dissolves easily.
Top Tip: Make Tea Ice Cubes
Want to keep your iced tea full of flavour?
Freeze some of your brewed tea in ice cube trays and use these instead of regular ice cubes. As they melt, they won’t water down your drink.
